3D foot casting technology for custom made
prescription Orthotics

Rx Orthotic Lab is a leading Orthotic laboratory that specializes in manufacturing prescription devices for medical practitioners worldwide. The company is also the developer of the proprietary live-link inventory system, which ensures their partners have access to the largest selection of quality footwear with 100% fill rates!

Physical Casting Process

Previously Rx Orthotic Lab manufactured custom foot Orthotics by receiving the negative casts or impressions shipped from the attending practitioner’s office.

Both patients and practitioners have found the process of taking negative impressions to  be very time consuming, costly, and often an untidy experience.  Traditionally this included the following steps and associated issues:

3D Foot Scanning Technology Improves Clinical Efficiency

“We’re really excited about how 3D3 Solutions 3D scanning technology will enhance the client experience around Custom Orthotics.  It will allow patients to receive their Orthotics much faster, improving the clinical treatment plan."

Dr. Teri Hayward, DC - Medical Consultant -  Rx Orthotics Lab

The Rx Group of Companies partnered with 3D3 Solutions to create a concrete clinical solution to foot casting that combines 3D scanning technology with advance medical theory. The foot scanner uses 3D3 Solutions’ proprietary white-light 3D technology that scans the patient’s foot in seconds to create a digital reproduction in the form of a 3D model. Once the foot has been scanned, the attending practitioner is able to view the foot scan in a number of desired casting positions, enter the corresponding Orthotic prescription and instantly send the file to the laboratory for production. This process allows for reduced in office casting supplies, outgoing freight charges, and allows for faster turn around times.

The 3D Scanning Process

Steps to create a 3D model using white-light scanning technology:

STEP 1

The patient rests his/her foot on the foot rest of the 3D scanner. A projector projects a series of reference patterns onto the foot. The light produces a deformation on the object. The information is captured using two high speed machine vision cameras. This process takes approximately 1.5 seconds.

STEP 2

The 3D scanner’s triangulation engine processes the images from the cameras to acquire the data needed to create the 3D model. The scanner uses 3D3 Solutions proprietary 3D scanning technology, FlexScan3D.

STEP 3

The 3D model is created within seconds. Automated 3D capture drastically reduces the time and cost in capturing complex physical measurements.

Benefits to 3D foot scanning technology

Improved Orthotic Therapy

The most important feature of our Scanning unit is the ability to enhance patient treatments and produce faster clinical outcomes.  By commencing Orthotic Therapy weeks faster than traditional manufacturers our clients are able to provide their patients with the best products and services in a more efficient, timely manner.  Our facility works extremely hard at ensuring that all orders are turned around within 3 to 5 business days!

Capture Foot Measurements in True 3D

While some systems claim to be foot scanners that scan in 3D, they are simply flatbed scanners that generate 3D models through estimation and not through real 3D capture.

3D3 Solutions offers True 3D scanners that provide authentic 3D data in the form of an STL file which can be utilized by any facility that runs a CNC machine platform enabling the milling of the exact image which is scanned.
